DESIGN PRINCIPLES


THE 5 HATS PRINCIPLE:


1. LOCATION: Organise information based on space and place. As long as its an area of the location

Example: Bowl of ramen drawing and labelling the ingredients. The bowl is the location and the ingredients are the information.

Pencil Case - The pencil case is the location where as the items in the 'location' such as scissors, pencil, stapler, pen, highlights, rubber, glue, etc. are the information.





2. ALPHABETICAL: Organising information by alphabetical order (dictionary), best used when you have enormous amount of data.

Example: Cafe order (organising the drinks in alphabetical order).


3. TIME: Organise certain series of events in a chronicle order (history of humanity) or by months/days/time.

Example: Organise daily schedule, small meals (5 times a day meal). Also directions (steps to series of events).

Fire-hose - easy and pictures of steps on how to use the fire-hose when a fire accrues.

4. CATEGORY: Organising information based on a specific group or a shared common trade.

Example: Colour, shape, texture, model, price, etc.


Colour pencils - Following the colours of the rainbow, from brightest to the darkest colour contained in the object, numbers label on the colour pencil identify the order that they have to be placed in.

5. HIERARCHY: Organising information based on chronological order.

Example: Small to big, youngest to oldest, less painful to most painful.
