DESIGN PROCESS -

The first thing we did during class was we watched a ted talk about 'Why people believe they can’t draw - and how to prove they can' by Graham Shaw. We then followed his instructions by drawing some animated characters. This shows that everyone can draw even just by following simple steps.

After that we were assign to draw our classmates without looking at the paper and lifting our pen, as shown below I drew my classmates Hanniya and Azizah. I made an attempt of drawing them two times, I believe my second try on Azizah are much better than the first whilst the opposite for Hanniya. Drawing without looking on the paper and keeping an eye on the subject only is more difficult than I thought and I had to move my pen very lightly and slowly to imagine where the lines of the subject on the paper are and where it should be. We were then told to create one still without lifting our pen of the paper however we we were allowed to look at the paper whilst drawing, as shown on my third attempt for Hanniya. In my opinion, it was harder because I was aware of what I am drawing and I could not lift my pen so I had over do the lines of the subject.

This time I used red sharpie pen and used plastic to draw on, we lift the plastic in front of the person to draw it directly by our point of view. The plastic had to be perfectly held so it would not move around and change the perspective.

URBAN SKETCHING AND VISUAL JOURNALISM:

Then we learnt about Urban Sketching. This is an observation that requires drawing from life instead of imagination and photography. Locations where we can see from our direct view point. Drawing allows us to tell a story about our surroundings, the time and place allows us to capture what is happening then and now. Used any kind of medium and explore our different individual styles. Example, pens, markers, paint, crayons and etc. The sketches that are drawn within the location brings back memories that could not be described on a piece of photograph, it does not evoke the memories of smell, sounds and other little details.

This is the drawing that I drew from the second floor of the building. We were told to draw the objective and observe what and capture the little details of what is happening in the current situation. Interesting stories that we can be able to tell to others by just sketching the location and subject.

Later on during the class, the whole class was told to explore the college and sketch interesting situations where you are able to tell a story within the drawing. The image above is one of the sketches that I drew, the location of the subject is in the drink shop 'BOOST' located in campus, the customer had just ordered his drink and the worker is just about to make it. Whilst waiting the customer was playing on his phone. In the current situation they were also looking at me because I was standing in the corner sketching them.
